i created this paper cut-out lantern as a visual response to the oxymoron 'lesser evil'. looking at femme fatale characters and victorian magic lanterns, the idea was to create an image which would project a much larger shadow of itself when a light was shone through it.

so it certainly has been a while, dissertation and assessment at uni amongst other things have been sucking my soul away. thought i should take a brief moment to make a few updates here before my exam project also takes over my life!

before i get in to posting some more recent work, i wanted to mention a couple things i went to over summer aside from my travels around Morocco

firstly, i enjoyed Polly Morgans 'Psychopomps' exhibition at Haunch of Venison in London, where i first discovered her work a couple of years ago. her taxidermy pieces never fail to amaze me, this show included four pieces based on the theme of mythological guides who lead souls from death to the afterlife, with brilliant titles (Atrial Flutter, Systematic Inflammation, Blue Fever and Black Fever). i could gush about how great her work is & the themes around it for ages, but here's a few snaps i took. the shadows cast from each piece were equally as lovely.

also at Haunch discovered these amazing ceramic pieces covered in crochet by Joanna Vasconcelos...

was glad to also catch Sally Manns exhibition 'The Family and the Land' at the Photographers Gallery, which made up part of my research for my dissertation. i am now a huge fan of her work. her series of images of bodies decomposing at a research facility in Tennesse were particularly haunting and strangely beautiful, but i find her portraits and landscape photographs equally as impressive. i would reccomend seeing her work for real if you ever get the chance, the prints are HUGE and her techniques make for stunning images

other than this i seemed to spend a lot of time at the Welcome Collection, caught the 'Skin' exhibition which i went back to a few times and went to several themed talks on the collection to prepare for my dissertation. the exhibitions they put on are always worth a visit, and i'm always finding bits i missed in the permanent collection. i thoroughly reccomend a visit if you're also into weird and wonderful things like 15th Century medical illustration, wax cadavers, snuff boxes made from an entire rams head, notebooks bound in human skin etc...

my photos i took were awful cuz of the dim lighting but i'll leave you with this nice selection of tattoos on a piece of human skin

Thought it apt to mention here that today is an awfully sad day due to the news that Captain Beefheart died (the namesake of this here blog of course being one of his songs)
Both the man and his music has been a great inspiration to me.

while i'm at it i thought i'd also post a few snaps from my recent trip to amsterdam with my uni class. it was a lovely few days (if a bit chilly) full of uht milk, waffles, raspberry white beer, vintage finds, tiny coffees, and sprinkles on toast...and strangely we didn't see the moon once!

Circus.

so this is my first attempt at animation of some sort. created for my extension study in letterforms. formed from research on circus/freakshow letterforms. made lovingly (sort of) and cack handedly using dip pen & ink, fineliners, photoshop and windows movie maker (hellish). complete with cheese-tastic 'old movie filter'.
the song is 'Circus' by the brilliant Tom Waits, love of my life.

it will be improved and finished when i get the time, there are some other characters along with One Eyed Myra i'm itching to illustrate.

i went with the theme of dogs.

unfortunately as my images are so dark the creasing from folding the packaging and poster really show up, maybe re-printing on thinner card & paper will look better, or maybe i was deliberately going for an aged look...

it's almost a year since i started painting my sugar skull designs on the walls of El Paso (mexican bar/restaurant in hoxton), but we're finally getting somewhere after starting up again so here's some photos of what i've been doing for the past few days there.

a recent project for uni called 'drawing is'. i looked at something i'm quite interested in - the mexican festival dia de los muertos (day of the dead) and how mexican culture has a totally different take on death to us. dia de los muertos is a joyful festival full of sugar skulls, marigolds and stories or poems where the lives of the deceased are celebrated! lovely.
